The first dog evolved roughly 12,000 years ago. Today, dogs are among the most successful mammals, with more than 400 different breeds and an estimated global population of 100 million.

All breeds of pregnant dogs carry a litter for roughly 63 days. Unlike human eggs, dog eggs aren't mature when they are released from the ovaries, so they're not ready for fertilization right away. That's why the male dog's sperm will attach to the uterine wall, and wait for several days until the egg matures for fertilization. Because of the time lapse, mothers can bear puppies with two different fathers.

Puppies are born blind and unable to walk. At birth, the mother will lick the puppies clean to stimulate their breathing. She will also eat the placenta, which releases a chemical to begin the production of milk. This instinctive behavior dates back to when dogs lived in the wild: by eating the placenta, the mother would cover any evidence of puppies that might attract predators.

At 60 days in the womb, three days before birth, the puppy has developed a full coat of hair, with nails and paw pads, and the body is covered with touch-sensitive nerve endings. It has also displayed its characteristic panting in the fetus, a behavior that helps the dog regulate its own body temperature in the absence of ample sweat glands.

At this point, the puppy has also developed its defining sense of smell and hearing. Dogs have nearly 200 million scent receptors in their nose, as opposed to a human's 5 million. Just days after birth, a puppy can detect smells at concentrations 100 times weaker than those detectable by humans. If a human touched a glass and set it down, a dog could pick up the scent of the human nearly two weeks later.

After day 30 in the fetus, unborn pups form eyeballs and vision similar to a color-blind human, who can't discern red, yellow or green. Scientists believe that dogs' color blindness adapted from their earliest ancestors who needed to compete for prey against other animals during nighttime.

Dog ears are much more sophisticated than humans', too. When pricked up, the ear reflects sound similar to when a human cups an ear with a hand. This adaptation helps hunting dogs detect high-octane noises given off by rodents. The dog can also hear sounds four times farther away than humans can.

Finally, the dog already has its whiskers, which are as sensitive as a human's fingertips. This makes it possible for dogs to sense the presence, size and shape of nearby objects just by detecting vibrations in the air.

Have fleas? We do. Unfortunately, the cold winter didnt kill them off. They thrive in hot / damp conditions. This humid weather has certainly given them the avenue to reproduce and be a big problem.

We dust our dog room with diatomaceous earth. It is a safe way to kill fleas in your basement, yard, mud room, etc. The product is all natural and in-expensive.I get it in 50 lb bags. (Reminds you of lime that you would put on your garden or grass) It breaks down the fleas' (and other bugs) outer exo-skeleton and eventually causes them to die. It is a product that takes a few days to work.

I also spray my dogs with a homemade remedy mixture of essential lavender oil, baby oil, and water. Fleas absolutely hate the smell of lavender. I use this weekly from a large spray bottle and spray all over their coats. I also put it in bath water when we bathe the dogs.

Lavender is also a good product for hot spots as it has a calming effect.

You want to be sure it is an essential therapeutic oil and not something you get in the candle department at Walmart.
